Best Recipe Garlic Bread

Recipe garlic bread is a great addition to so many meals.

Serve it with pasta, with a Caesar salad, with home made soup or as an appetizer. Itís hard to believe that something so nutritious, versatile and tasty can also be easy to make.

It is thought that recipe garlic bread was invented during the late 1940s. Its roots lie in the Italian-American restaurants that mushroomed in the US during that time.

Garlic bread is made from Italian or French bread slices. Itís spread on both sides with garlic butter, and heated in the oven, broiled, or grilled. As you might expect, there are many variations to recipe garlic bread.

First Recipe Garlic Bread: Fast and Easy

Ingredients:

1 loaf Italian bread (or French). If you want to bake your own bread from scratch, youíll find recipes for French and Italian bread elsewhere on this web site.

1 ½ sticks of butter, softened to room temperature (I suggest you do not substitute).
¾ cup finely chopped parsley
6 cloves of garlic, finely minced.
¾ tsp garlic powder
3 tsp sweet basil
dash of oregano

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

While oven is heating, mix all ingredients (except bread) in a bowl. Split bread in half lengthwise, and brush cut surfaces with 2/3 of the garlic mixture. Save the other 1/3 for later.

Place the buttered bread directly on your oven rack, and heat for eight to ten minutes.

Remove bread from oven, and allow to cool until you can handle it. When cool enough, slice your recipe garlic bread into slices. Spread the remaining garlic mixture on both sides of the slices. Place slices on a cookie sheet and return to heated oven for 2-3 minutes. Remove.

Turn oven on to broil mode. Return recipe garlic bread to oven, and broil for a few minutes until top is brown and bubbly.

Tip #2: Watch carefully. This can burn easily.

Remove from oven when brown, serve your recipe garlic gread, and enjoy!

Variation: Sprinkle recipe garlic bread with shredded parmesan cheese before placing under broiler.

You will need:

Garlic Puree, made from two roasted heads of garlic

¼ lb soft, unsalted butter
2 tbsp dry yeast
½ cup warm water
2 ½ cups warm water
2 tbsp kosher salt
3 ¼ cup unbleached whole wheat flour
3 ¼ cup unbleached whole purpose flour
Optional but recommended: Bread Dough Enhancer. Use per manufacturer's instructions.

Prepare garlic puree and cream it with the butter. Bring to room temperature if refrigerated.

Mix yeast with Ĺ cup warm water. Add additional 2/1/2 cups warm water. Add kosher salt.

Stir in the flour, a bit at a time. Start with the wheat flour, then add unbleached flour. When mixed, turn onto a floured surface and knead for 10 or 15 minutes. Dough should be smooth and elastic, and indentations will remain if you poke the dough with your finger. Add flour while kneading if required.

Cover and let rest for a few minutes. Knead the dough a few more times, then turn into a fresh, buttered bowl. Turn it to coat with the butter.

Cover, and allow to rise until doubled in bulk. When doubled, punch down with floured hands.

Sprinkle a baking sheet generously with cornmeal. Use two baking sheets if they are small.

Now you are ready to shape the dough for recipe garlic bread. Divide it into three equal parts. Cover the two pieces that you are not working with. Taking a rolling pin, roll each dough ball into a rectangle that is about 14Ē by 7Ē. Spread the rectangle with the garlic butter. Roll the long edge towards the opposite edge, as if making a jelly roll. Pinch ends closed.

Place on baking sheets, then slash the loaves lightly at two-inch intervals.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F., and place pan of boiling water on the oven floor. Bake recipe garlic bread for 35 or 40 minutes. During this time, spray the bread with water periodically.

The bread will sound hollow when it is done. Cool on wire racks, or eat recipe garlic bread while still warm.
